Impact Performance of Football Helmets
It is critical that manufacturers of football helmets are able to accurately determine how their product will distribute the shock of an impact, while protecting the head. Without sophisticated testing equipment, manufactures may not be able to accurately simulate force, geometries and other impact characteristics that the helmets may be subjected to on the playing field.
To identify how the helmet will distribute the shock and absorb the energy from an impact, we set up a test on our CEAST 9350.
The amount of force transmitted through the helmet is quantified with the Force Transmission Package. In this test, the helmet is installed onto a headform, which is then mounted onto a custom Piezo Compression Platen. Data is collected through the DAS (Data Acquistion System) and Visual Impact Software.
CEAST 9300 Series
Impact resistance is one of the most important properties for component designers to consider, as well as the most difficult to quantify. Impact resistance is a critical measure of service life and more importantly these days, it involves the perplexing problem of product safety and liability. With the combined experience of Dynatup® and CEAST, Instron® has more than 80 years experience in designing impact testing systems to simulate real-life impact conditions.
